The numbers do not lie. So far, the discussion about speed limits on German highways has been shaped primarily by perceived truths, but now the Federal Statistical Office has revealed data that reveals the real situation. In 2018, 424 people died on the highways in Goethe’s country. Nevertheless, German highways remain among the safest roads in the world. No speed limit. Because we can’t deduce from the statistics that speed limits prevent fatal accidents. In the highway sections WITHOUT speed limits, the inappropriate speed was the cause of death of 45 percent of the victims, and on the sections with speed limit – for 50 percent.
